COI: Social Presence & Oral Communication

Community of Inquiry (COI)

Upon a reread of COI, it was evident that the technology is one component of establishing COI, but it’s also about building in the engagements using technologies in online course design. What struck me is that social presence can be more engaging with a variety of methods and tools.

We use discussion forums in our course, which allow for time for reflection and critical response, which is great for introverts like myself who prefer hang more time to think and respond. But I see a benefit of conducting frequent smaller group discussions using synchronous, oral communications tools, such as Skype and Google Hangouts, to create bonds between learners, bring out learner’s personalities, and to idea share and create concepts. I miss the synergy of interacting directly with other learners. This would provide a greater blend of oral and text communications.
