Upcoming Trends

The gaming industry is a pioneer in VR and banking on it. With the release of Playstation’s VR it has already gone mainstream. Google cardboard is a very inexpensive way to access VR with a smart phone. Augment Reality (AR) went mainstream this summer with the release of Pokémon Go. AR has a great deal of potential with the less upfront costs and development than VR. Wearable devices are in their infancy: Google Glass and iWatch are early models.

Web 3.0, the Semantic Web, and artificial intelligence (AI) along with the Internet of Things continue to develop.

Here’s the preview of the New Media Consortium’s (NMC) Horizon Report Preview 2017 Higher Education Edition that outlines short, medium and long term advances in innovation in edtech for higher ed.
